What is Gardasil and how is it used?

Gardasil is a vaccine used to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52 and 58 that cause cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, vulva, anal cancer, and genital warts.

 Gardasil can be used alone or with other medicines.

Gardasil belongs to a class of drugs called vaccines, inactive, viral.

Not recommended for use by children under 9 years old

GARDASIL is a vaccine intended for girls and women from 9 to 26 years of age to prevent the following diseases caused by the types of human papillomavirus (HPV) included in the vaccine:

Genital warts (adenoma) caused by HPV types 6 and 1 and the following precancerous or dysplastic lesions caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18: Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) Grade 2/3 cervical carcinoma in situ (AIS)

Cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1

vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) grade 2 and grade 3

Vaginal intraepithelial neoplasia (VaIN) grade 2 and grade 3

Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) grades 1, 2 and 3

GARDASIL is used in boys and men 9 to 26 years of age to prevent the following diseases caused by the types of HPV included in the vaccine:

Anal cancer caused by HPV types 16 and 18

Genital warts (adenoid adenoma) caused by HPV types 6 and 11 and the following precancerous or dysplastic lesions caused by HPV types 6, 11, 16 and 18: Anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN) grades 1 and 2 and 3

Limitations and efficacy of Gardasil

The health care provider must inform the patient, parent, or guardian that vaccination does not eliminate the need for women to continue to have the recommended cervical cancer screening. Women receiving GARDASIL should continue to have cervical cancer screening for each level of care.

GARDASIL recipients should not discontinue anal cancer screening if recommended by their healthcare provider.

What are the possible side effects of using Gardasil?

Gardasil may cause serious side effects including:

fever,

Headache,

nausea,

Diarrhea,

Abdominal pain and

fainting

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

injection site reactions (swelling, redness, or pain),

headache and fever
