Composition of Risperdal Injection

Risperdal Consta injection contains 25 mg of the active ingredient risperidone, an antipsychotic that helps relieve symptoms of schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. It works by blocking dopamine and serotonin receptors in the brain.

Indications for Use of Risperdal

Risperdal injections are used to maintain the treatment of schizophrenia in patients already taking oral antipsychotic tablets or capsules; the injections help stop symptoms and prevent relapse.

Risperidone Consta dose

  • The doctor determines the appropriate dose of Risperdal injection according to the patient’s condition.
  • Risperdal is administered as an intramuscular injection in the arm or buttock every two weeks.
  • It must not be administered intravenously.
  • Risperidone dose range is at 25, 37.5, or 50 mg if needed, depending on the physician’s assessment of the patient’s condition and the oral dose previously used.

Side Effects of Risperdal Injection

Risperdal injections may cause some side effects, such as:

  • History of Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome, which involves high fever, muscle rigidity, sweating, and reduced consciousness
  • Low white blood cell count
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Prolonged or painful erections
  • Kidney or liver problems
  • High prolactin levels or presence of a prolactin-dependent tumor
  • History of blood clots in the patient or family
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medicines, such as:

  • Sedatives
  • Antihistamines
  • Opioid painkillers
  • Drugs that slow the heart rate
  • Parkinson’s disease drugs such as levodopa
  • Drugs that lower calcium levels (such as some diuretics)

  • Epilepsy medications

Storage Instructions

  • Store in a refrigerator at 2–8°C
