The mechanism of action of pantoprazole
Hydrochloric acid (HCl) secretion into the gastric lumen is a process regulated primarily by the proton pump H (+)/K (+)-ATPase, which is expressed at high levels in gastric parietal cells.
Proton pump inhibitors, which inhibit gastric acid secretion by irreversibly blocking the hydrogen/potassium (H+/K+ exchange ATPase) enzyme system (the "proton pump" of the gastric parietal cells).
Pantoprazole belongs to a class of drugs called "proton pump inhibitors."
