Type of dosage: Oral

Mechanism of action: Lurasidone is an atypical antipsychotic medication that works by blocking dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors. This helps to reduce the symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, such as hallucinations, delusions, and mania.

Therapeutic indications: Latuda is indicated for the treatment of schizophrenia in adults and adolescent aged 13 years and over. It is also indicated for the treatment of bipolar I disorder in adults.

Method of administration: Latuda should be taken once daily, with or without food.

Non-pharmacological treatments & advice:

Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while taking Latuda.

Talk to your doctor about all of the medications and supplements you are taking before starting Latuda.

Monitor your blood sugar levels closely, especially if you have diabetes.

Drink plenty of fluids and avoid strenuous activity, especially in hot weather.

Contact your doctor if you experience any side effects, such as dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, or vomiting.

Additional information:

Latuda is generally well-tolerated and has a lower risk of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) than other antipsychotic medications.

Latuda is also available in a lower dose (18.5mg) for patients with moderate hepatic impairment or who are taking certain medications that may interact with Latuda.
