Mirena Hormonal Intrauterine Device (IUD) Levonorgestrel 20 mcg/24h – 1 Piece is placed inside the uterus by a doctor. It slowly releases a low dose of levonorgestrel directly into the uterus every day to prevent pregnancy for up to 8 years.
Mirena is used for:
Contraception for up to 8 years
Treatment of heavy menstrual bleeding of unknown cause for up to 5 years, for those who can use an IUD. It is not used for girls who have not reached puberty or have not had their first menstrual period, nor for women over 65 years old.
Mirena should not be used in cases of:
Hypersensitivity to its ingredients
Pregnancy
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Genital infections
Uterine infection after childbirth
Vaginal bleeding of unknown cause
Fibroids
Abnormal cervical cell growth
Liver disease
Uterine infection after abortion in the past 3 months
Leukemia
Endocarditis
Uterine or cervical cancer
Previously placed IUD not yet removed
Acne
Nausea
Hair loss
Vaginal discharge
Menstrual pain
Reduced libido
Weight gain
These side effects are common during the first months after IUD placement but usually gradually disappear over time.
