What is GlucaGen HypoKit 1 mg powder and solvent for solution for injection?

GlucaGen HypoKit 1 mg is an emergency medication containing the active substance Glucagon. It is indicated for the treatment of severe hypoglycemic reactions (severely low blood sugar) in adults and children with diabetes mellitus—particularly those receiving insulin therapy—when the patient is unconscious or unable to ingest oral sugar. Glucagon stimulates the liver to release stored glucose (glycogen), rapidly raising blood glucose levels and helping restore consciousness during severe hypoglycemic episodes.

What is GlucaGen used for?

  • Used for the emergency treatment of severe hypoglycemia in patients with diabetes.

  • Suitable for situations where the patient is unconscious or unable to consume carbohydrates orally.

  • Indicated for both adults and children according to physician-specified dosages.

  • May be used in hospital settings during certain diagnostic procedures to temporarily inhibit gastrointestinal motility, strictly under medical supervision.

GlucaGen HypoKit how to use

  • Preparation: Reconstitute the drug immediately before use by dissolving the glucagon powder with the provided solvent.

  • Adults and Children weighing over 25 kg (or older than 6–8 years): Inject 1 mg subcutaneously (SC) or intramuscularly (IM).

  • Children weighing less than 25 kg (or younger than 6–8 years): Administer a dose of 0.5 mg subcutaneously (SC) or intramuscularly (IM).

  • Post-Recovery: Once the patient regains consciousness, administer a fast-acting oral source of sugar, followed by a carbohydrate-rich snack to prevent recurrent hypoglycemia.

  • Emergency Action: If the patient does not respond within 10 minutes, call for emergency medical assistance immediately, as intravenous glucose may be required by healthcare professionals.

Side Effects

GlucaGen HypoKit may cause side effects, including:

  • Nausea or vomiting.

  • Transient increase in heart rate (tachycardia).

  • Temporary elevation in blood pressure.

  • Rare allergic reactions, such as skin rash or difficulty breathing.

Precautions and Warnings

  • Do not use in patients with a known hypersensitivity to glucagon or any component of the formulation.

  • Efficacy may be reduced in individuals with depleted liver glycogen stores, such as during prolonged fasting, severe malnutrition, or chronic hypoglycemia.

  • Contraindicated in patients with pheochromocytoma or glucagonoma.

  • Family members, caregivers, or close contacts should be properly trained on how to prepare and administer the injection before an emergency arises.

  • Following recovery from a severe hypoglycemic episode, consult a physician to evaluate the cause and adjust diabetes management to prevent recurrence.

Drug Interactions

GlucaGen HypoKit may interact with certain medications, including:

  • Insulin: May antagonize the glucose-raising effect of glucagon.

  • Indomethacin: May blunt or diminish the glycemic response to glucagon.

  • Warfarin: Glucagon may potentiate its anticoagulant effect.

  • Beta-blockers: May increase the likelihood of temporary tachycardia or an elevated blood pressure spike following glucagon administration.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at temperatures not exceeding 25°C.

  • Retain in the original outer carton to protect from light.

  • Do not use after the expiration date printed on the package.

  • Post-Reconstitution: Use the prepared solution immediately and properly discard any unused portion. Do not store or reuse reconstituted solution.
