What is Briviact?

Briviact 10 mg is an antiepileptic medication containing the active ingredient brivaracetam at a concentration of 10 mg per tablet. Brivaracetam acts by binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain to modulate neurotransmitter release and regulate electrical activity, helping control epileptic seizures. Briviact is indicated as adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures, with or without secondary generalization, in adults, adolescents, and children aged 2 years and older based on clinical evaluation.

What are Briviact 10mg tablets used for?

  • Helps reduce the frequency of partial-onset seizures.

  • Used as an add-on (adjunctive) therapy alongside other antiepileptic drugs.

  • Indicated for adults, adolescents, and children aged 2 years and older, with dosing tailored to body weight and clinical response.

How to Use Briviact

  • Use Briviact under medical supervision; the dosage is determined based on age, body weight, renal/hepatic function, and individual clinical response.

  • The total daily dose is typically administered in two equal doses, approximately 12 hours apart.

  • Adults, adolescents, and children weighing 50 kg or more: The usual therapeutic dose ranges from 50 mg to 200 mg daily.

  • Children weighing less than 50 kg: Dosage is calculated based on body weight.

  • Swallow tablets whole with an adequate amount of liquid; do not chew or crush.

  • May be taken with or without food.

Notice: Do not initiate, adjust, or discontinue medication without direct guidance from your physician.

  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered and return to the normal dosing schedule to maintain therapeutic blood levels and prevent breakthrough seizures.

Briviact side effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Somnolence (drowsiness)

  • Dizziness

  • Fatigue and asthenia

  • Headache

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Mood or behavioral changes in some patients

Seek immediate emergency medical attention if severe skin reactions, swelling of the face/throat, difficulty breathing, severe psychiatric changes, or suicidal thoughts occur.

Precautions & Warnings

  • Do not use in patients with a known hypersensitivity to brivaracetam, other pyrrolidone derivatives, or any of the excipients.

  • Inform your physician if you have hepatic impairment; dose adjustments are necessary, and maximum daily dose limits are lower in patients with liver disease.

  • Closely monitor for notable changes in mood or behavior, including depression, irritability, or suicidal ideation/behavior, and notify a doctor immediately if they appear.

  • May cause somnolence and dizziness; exercise caution when driving or operating machinery until individual tolerance is established.

  • Serious dermatological reactions, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), have been reported; discontinue the drug and seek immediate medical care if severe rash, blistering, or skin peeling occurs.

  • Do not discontinue Briviact abruptly; dosage should generally be tapered gradually under medical supervision to minimize the risk of rebound seizures.

  • Each 10 mg tablet contains 88 mg of lactose; inform your doctor in cases of rare hereditary galactose intolerance, total lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption.

  • Consult your physician prior to use if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all concurrent medications, especially other antiepileptic drugs (AEDs):

  • Brivaracetam may interact with other medications via hepatic enzyme pathways; it may increase plasma concentrations of drugs metabolized by CYP2C19 (e.g., omeprazole, lansoprazole, and diazepam).

  • Potential interactions exist with other medications dependent on liver enzymes for clearance.

  • Concomitant use of other AEDs may require dosage adjustments based on individual patient response and monitoring.

Storage Conditions

  • Store at a temperature below 30°C.

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture.
