Asacol suppositories contain 500 mg of the active ingredient "Mesalazine," an anti-inflammatory agent that works locally to reduce inflammation in the colon.

What are Asacol suppositories used for?

Asacol 500 mg suppositories are used for:

  • The treatment and maintenance of remission in ulcerative colitis.

  • Treating mild to moderate proctitis and proctosigmoiditis.

Asacol 500 mg Suppositories Dosage

  • The usual dose is one suppository inserted into the rectum up to 3 times daily, with the final dose taken before bedtime.

  • Empty the bowels (if necessary) and wash your hands thoroughly.

  • Remove the plastic wrapper from the suppository.

  • Adopt a squatting position or lean forward.

  • Gently insert the suppository into the rectum; if necessary, the tip of the suppository may be lubricated with petroleum jelly.

  • Wash your hands again.

  • Try to avoid having a bowel movement for at least one hour after inserting the suppository.

Contraindications

  • Concurrent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen.

  • Previous history of blood disorders, especially while taking medications such as Sulfasalazine.

Storage and Handling

  • Keep out of reach of children.

  • Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C, protected from light.

  • Do not use the medication after the expiration date printed on the packaging.
