Salazopyrin contains sulfasalazine, which helps relieve inflammation by suppressing immunity, especially for gut inflammation.

Salazopyrin 500mg uses

Salazopyrin is used for:

  • inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis after non-steroid anti-inflammatory treatment fails.

Salazopyrin dosage

  • The appropriate dose is determined by the doctor.

  • Dosage varies depending on the patient's condition and response to treatment.

  • Salazopyrin is preferred to be taken after meals.

  • Adult inflammatory bowel disease dose: 1 - 2 g 4 times daily.

  • Children's inflammatory bowel disease dose: 40 - 60 mg per kilogram of child weight per day divided by 4 - 6 doses.

  • Rheumatoid arthritis dose: 2 salazopyrin tablets 2 - 3 times per day (total 2 - 3 g per day).

Salazopyrin side effects

  • Nausea and vomiting.

Salazopyrin contraindications

Salazopyrin is not used in the case of:

  • Blockage of the intestine or urinary system.

  • Porphyria.

  • Children under 2 years.

Salazopyrin and pregnancy

Salazopyrin may affect the absorption and metabolism of folic acid, which may harm the fetus, so the drug is used during pregnancy only if necessary following the doctor's directions.

Salazopyrin and lactation

Salazopyrin is not used during lactation unless its benefits outweigh the risks of use.

Drug interactions

Care should be taken before taking Salazopyrin besides any other medication, especially:

  • Antacids.

  • Antibiotics.

  • Digoxin.

  • Ferrous sulfate.
