What are the uses of omeprazole:

Omeprazole belongs to a group of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. They work by reducing the amount of acid your stomach produces.

Omeprazole is used to treat the following conditions:

In adults:

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease, in which stomach acid escapes into the esophagus (the tube that connects your throat to your stomach), causing pain, inflammation and heartburn.

• Ulcers in the upper part of the intestine or stomach.

• Ulcers infected with bacteria called "Helicobacter pylori".

• Ulcers caused by medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Omeprazole can also be used to prevent ulcers from forming if you are taking an NSAID.

• Increased acidity in the stomach due to the growth of the pancreas (Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).

In children:

Children over 1 and 10 kg

• Gastroesophageal reflux disease in children. Symptoms of the condition can include stomach contents returning to the mouth, vomiting and poor weight gain.

Children and adolescents over 4 years old

• Ulcers infected with bacteria called "Helicobacter pylori".

Do not take omeprazole:

• If you are allergic to omeprazole or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.

• If you are allergic to medicines that contain other proton pump inhibitors.

Warnings and precautions:

Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking omeprazole. Omeprazole may mask the symptoms of other diseases. Therefore, if any of the following happen to you before or while you start taking omeprazole, talk to your doctor right away:

• You lose a lot of weight for no reason and have trouble swallowing.

• You suffer from stomach pain or indigestion.

• You start vomiting food or blood.

• Black stools (blood-stained stools).

• If you suffer from severe or persistent diarrhoea.

• You have serious liver problems.

• You are scheduled to undergo a specific blood test (chromogranin A).

Taking a proton pump inhibitor such as omeprazole, especially over more than a year, may slightly increase your risk of a broken hip, wrist, or spine. Tell your doctor if you have osteoporosis or if you take corticosteroids (which can increase your risk of osteoporosis).

Possible side effects:

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you notice any of the following rare but serious side effects, stop taking omeprazole and call your doctor right away: severe allergic reaction or symptoms of liver problems.

Other side effects include:

• Headache

• Diarrhea and stomach pain

• Constipation and flatulence

Stomach polyps

• Swollen feet and ankles

Troubled sleep

• rash and itching of the skin

• Feeling unwell and lacking in energy

• blood problems

Low levels of sodium in the blood

Feeling restless, confused and depressed

• Altered sense of taste

• Vision problems such as blurred vision

• Suddenly feeling wheezing

• dry mouth

• Inflammation inside the mouth

Liver problems

• Hair loss

• Skin rash when exposed to sunlight

• Shared Pay

Other medicines and omeprazole:

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken, or might take any other medicines. This includes medicines that you buy without a prescription. This is because omeprazole can affect the way some medicines work and some medicines can have an effect on omeprazole.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of the following medicines used in:

• fungal infection

• heart problems

• anxiety

• epilepsy

tuberculosis

• HIV infection

• organ transplant

Slight depression

• intermittent claudication

• blood clots

• cancer

How to take omeprazole:

• Always take this medicine exactly as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Consult your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.

• Your doctor will tell you how many capsules to take and for how long. This will depend on your condition and how old you are.

• It is recommended to take your capsules in the morning.

• You can take the capsules with food or on an empty stomach.

• Swallow your capsules whole with half a glass of water. Do not chew or crush the capsules.

This is because the capsules contain coated granules that prevent the drug from being broken down

down from the acid in your stomach. It is important not to damage the pellets.

How to store omeprazole:

• Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.

• Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the carton, bottle label, or plaque after EXP. The expiration date refers to the last day of the same month.

• Do not store above 30°C.

• Store this medicine in the original packaging (blister) or keep the bottle tightly closed in order to protect from moisture.

• Do not dispose of medicines in wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines you no longer use. These measures will help protect the environment.
