What are Nitroderm Patches?

The patch gradually releases nitroglycerin through the skin into the bloodstream, helping to dilate blood vessels and reduce the workload on the heart. It is primarily used to prevent angina attacks and reduce their frequency.

How to Use Nitroderm 5 mg Patches

• Usually, one patch is applied daily to a clean, dry, and relatively hairless area of skin, such as the upper chest, arm, shoulder, abdomen, or thigh. Rotate application sites regularly to minimize skin irritation.

• Remove the old patch before applying a new one, and adhere to the schedule specified by your doctor, who may recommend a daily nitrate-free interval to minimize the risk of developing drug tolerance.

• Do not stop taking this medication abruptly; it must be tapered off gradually (e.g., over 4–6 weeks) under medical supervision to avoid worsening angina.

Important: Do not use these patches to treat an acute angina attack that has already started. In such cases, use a fast-acting nitrate formulation (such as sublingual nitroglycerin tablets or spray) as directed by your physician.

Precautions and Warnings

• Available by prescription only and must be used under medical supervision.

• Do not use if you are allergic to nitroglycerin, nitrates, or any of the product’s components.

• Contraindicated in cases of severe hypotension (low blood pressure), circulatory shock, and certain conditions involving elevated intracranial pressure.

Drug Interactions

Nitroglycerin may interact with:

• Erectile dysfunction medications such as Sildenafil, Tadalafil, and other PDE-5 inhibitors; combining these is a major interaction that can trigger a severe drop in blood pressure.

• Antihypertensive medications (blood pressure-lowering drugs).

• Other nitrates and vasodilators.

• Certain medications for depression and psychiatric disorders.

• Certain migraine medications, such as Dihydroergotamine.

• Certain analgesics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all medications and supplements you use before starting therapy.

Storage Instructions

• Store Nitroderm TTS at room temperature in a suitable place away from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight.

• Keep out of reach of children.

• Important: Used patches still contain residual nitroglycerin; dispose of them safely and away from children.
