What are the indications for Azathioprine pills?

Azathioprine pills are used for:

  • Preventing organ transplant rejection.

  • Treating autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Azathioprine Dosage

  • The medication must be taken according to the doctor's instructions.

  • To prevent transplant rejection: On the first day, the dose may reach 5 mg per kg of body weight. For the remainder of the treatment period, the dose ranges from 1 to 4 mg per kg of body weight daily.

  • For other conditions: At the beginning of treatment, the dose is 1 to 3 mg per kg of body weight daily; the doctor may subsequently reduce the dose.

Azathioprine Side Effects

Common side effects of Azathioprine include:

  • Bacterial, viral, or parasitic infections.

  • Decreased bone marrow function.

  • Low white blood cell count (leukopenia).

  • Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia).

Contraindications

Do not use Azathioprine in cases of:
