Picoprep Sachets, for bowel cleansing to prepare the gastrointestinal tract for examination, such as colonoscopy, prior to certain procedures, for adults and children aged 9 years and above.
Picoprep powder for oral solution is used for bowel cleansing to prepare the gastrointestinal tract for examinations, such as colonoscopy or barium enema x-ray examination, prior to:
Intravenous pyelogram (IVP).
Colorectal surgery.
For adults and children aged 9 years and above.
Patients should drink at least one glass of clear fluids, in addition to the water taken with Picoprep, every hour until bedtime to maintain hydration.
Patients must stop drinking fluids two hours before the procedure.
Dissolve the contents of Picoprep by slowly adding the powder to about 250 ml of warm (not boiling) water.
The solution may appear cloudy, may heat up, and produce effervescence.
Stir gently until effervescence subsides, then allow the solution to cool.
The solution should be ingested within 24 hours of reconstitution.
Picoprep may cause some side effects, such as:
Bloating.
Abdominal fullness.
Nausea.
Abdominal cramps.
Anal irritation.
Vomiting.
Picoprep should not be used in cases of:
Hypersensitivity to its components.
Severe renal impairment.
Gastrointestinal obstruction.
Gastric retention.
Intestinal perforation.
Toxic megacolon.
Toxic colitis.
Ileus.
Patients with a stoma.
Children under 9 years of age.
Sodium picosulfate: a stimulant laxative that acts directly on the lining of the colon.
Magnesium carbonate.
Citric acid: reacts with magnesium carbonate to form magnesium citrate, also a laxative, which draws water into the colon, producing watery stools that empty the bowel within about 3 hours prior to the procedure.
Keep out of reach of children.
Store at a temperature not exceeding 25°C.
Do not store at 2–8°C for more than 24 hours, or at room temperature for more than 6 hours after reconstitution.
