Tegretol Cr 200 Mg 50 Tab is an anticonvulsant medication used to treat certain types of epilepsy, trigeminal neuralgia, and to prevent bipolar disorder episodes. It contains the active ingredient Carbamazepine, which works by reducing abnormal electrical activity in the brain.

Indications

Tegretol CR is used to treat:

  • Partial and secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

  • Primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures.

  • Trigeminal neuralgia.

  • Prevention of bipolar disorder episodes.

Dosage and Administration

Epilepsy

  • Adults and children >12 years:

    • Initial dose: 200 mg twice daily (tablets or extended-release tablets).

    • Increase weekly until effective dose is reached (typically 800–1200 mg/day).

    • Maximum dose: 1600 mg/day in rare cases.

  • Children 6–12 years:

    • Initial dose: 100 mg twice daily.

    • Increase weekly as needed. Maintenance: 400–800 mg/day.

    • Maximum: 1000 mg/day.

  • Children <6 years:

    • Initial dose: 10–20 mg/kg/day divided into 2–3 doses (tablets) or 4 doses (suspension).

    • Maximum: Do not exceed 35 mg/kg/day.

Trigeminal Neuralgia

  • Start with 100 mg twice daily.

  • Dose may be increased every 12 hours as needed.

  • Maximum: 1200 mg/day.

  • Effective dose typically 400–800 mg/day.


Tegretol CR can be taken with or without food.

Common side effects may include:

  • Dizziness, drowsiness, and unsteadiness.

  • Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dry mouth.

  • Loss of appetite, bradycardia, low blood pressure.

  • Skin rash, photosensitivity.

Contraindications

Do not use Tegretol if you have:

  • Hypersensitivity to Carbamazepine or tricyclic antidepressants.

  • Blood disorders like porphyria.

  • History of bone marrow suppression.

  • Cardiac conduction abnormalities.

  • Use of MAO inhibitors within the past two weeks.

Precautions and Warnings

  • May cause dizziness or drowsiness; avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

  • Do not stop the medication abruptly.

  • Monitor liver and blood function regularly.

  • May reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives; consider non-hormonal methods or pills with ≥50 mcg estrogen.


Use with caution in:

  • Elderly patients.

  • Patients with heart, kidney, or liver disease.

  • Glaucoma patients.

  • Those with psychiatric or blood disorders.

  • History of skin rash or allergy to Tegretol.

Pregnancy and Lactation

  • Pregnancy category D: Use only if potential benefits outweigh the risks.

  • Excreted in breast milk; breastfeeding should be discontinued or the medication should be stopped based on medical advice.

Drug Interactions

  • May interact with liver enzyme inducers like phenytoin—dose adjustments may be needed.

  • May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives and cause galactorrhea.

  • Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors within 14 days.

Storage

  • Store below 30°C.

  • Protect from light and moisture.

  • Keep out of reach of children.
