3. Mechanism of Action:
Ripens the cervix (softening and thinning) by stimulating contraction of cervical smooth muscle fibers.
Increases uterine prostaglandin production, further stimulating contractions.
May also increase fetal lung maturity.
4. Therapeutic Indications:
Induction of labor at term (38-42 weeks gestation):
When labor has not started spontaneously.
When there are medical reasons to induce labor, such as maternal or fetal health concerns.
Cervical ripening before other obstetric procedures:
Vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery.
Caesarean section.
5. Method of Administration:
Single application of 1mg gel inserted high into the posterior vaginal vault using a disposable applicator.
Repeat application up to four times at 6-hourly intervals if necessary.
Continuous fetal and maternal monitoring throughout treatment.
6. Non-Pharmacological Treatments & Advice:
Discuss alternative methods of labor induction with your doctor: Membrane sweeping, Foley catheter placement, amniotomy.
Prepare for labor naturally: Stay active, practice relaxation techniques, eat a healthy diet, get adequate sleep.
Manage potential side effects: Fever, chills, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, uterine hyperstimulation (excessive contractions).
